Hundreds of Students and Educators Learn About Truth and Reconciliation at the Healing Forest

Updated: 5 days ago

Keepers of the Forest spent two days on the land welcoming over 350 students and educators (from 7 schools in 2 divisions) to KAHF to mark the third National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 28 and 29, 2023.

We saw many familiar friends and welcomed new friends to the forest!

Students were welcomed to the Healing Forest with the sight, sounds and smell of a sacred fire where they could give tobacco offerings or warm up.

They listened to stories from a survivor, the child of a survivor and the grandchild of a survivor.

Many students participated in an optional smudge and received teachings and protocols for harvesting medicines on-site.

Everyone enjoyed the bannock and jam from Babba's Bannock and Jam Fund in loving memory of Dr. Lee Anne Block. We had lots of sticky fingers and full tummies.

Educators and students also participated in onsite self-guided activities that included reading books from the KAHF library, holding various sharing circles, playing games on the land, viewing the river during river walks, playing on the play structure and exploring St. John’s Park.

We are very grateful to TD Park People Grants for the funding to make these days possible.

We hope to continue living, learning and growing on the land in the shared spirit of reconciliation.
