1,200 Students Learn About Truth and Reconciliation at Healing Forest

Updated: 3 days ago

To commemorate the National day for Truth and Reconciliation/Orange shirt day, Kapabamayak Achaak Healing Forest hosted five school groups from several different school divisions in Winnipeg on Sept 27 & 28, 2024.

This year was the best turnout with more than 1,200 students and teachers over the two days, keeping the cohesive team of Keepers and volunteers very busy.

In addition to powerful reflections from several residential school survivors, this year two tipis were erected onsite for storytelling and an art initiative. The artist for the grandmother stones was onsite to share about the images.

Students also engaged in self-guided learning activities including medicine picking & scavenger hunts.

Children and teachers enjoyed a snack of bannock and jam (provided by Baba’s Bannock and Jam fund) and were also given water to keep them cool. Many students also brought their lunches to enjoy a picnic in the park.

Each school also received a book for their libraries donated by the Healing Forest.

KAHF is grateful to the City of Winnipeg Parks for opening the park washrooms and to the generosity of the TD Park People Grant for its help making these two days possible.

Although the knowledge shared was heavy at times, it was presented with dignity and honour.

We hope that everyone present will remember and hold the teachings in their hearts and minds.
